Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World · chapter 4 · member edition

Rule #1: Work Deeply

Rule #1 is where Newport translates theory into practice, but two of his three scientific pillars have cracked. Ego depletion failed a massive 23-lab replication in 2016. The 4-hour limit is specific to deliberate practice, not all deep work. Jung’s Bollingen Tower was a spiritual project, not a productivity hack. The practical advice (routines, rituals, dedicated space) may work, but not for the reasons Newport gives.
