This is Harari’s most famous chapter and his most defensible. The bioarchaeological evidence does show health declines at the farming transition. But the ‘fraud’ framing is rhetorical, not scientific – no single generation was deceived. The biggest update since 2011 is Graeber & Wengrow’s ‘The Dawn of Everything’ (2021), which documents far more variation in how agricultural societies organized themselves than Harari’s deterministic narrative allows.
