The trick: The Annualiser
Stripe agreed to pay $7 billion for a company that routes API calls between AI models.
It was worth $1.3 billion three months ago. Estimated revenue multiple: 50x.
Stripe finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, per Bloomberg and TechCrunch. OpenRouter raised at $1.3B in its Series B just three months earlier.
Before you read on. Your call?
TRUE, BUT
50x
the deal is reported by Bloomberg, Fortune, and TechCrunch. Stripe declined to comment. OpenRouter's revenue is estimated at $140M ARR (up from $50M in March), putting the multiple at 50x revenue. PYMNTS calculated it at 70x using a lower revenue estimate. Either multiple far exceeds the 25-30x AI median.
The twist
OpenRouter's pitch was literally 'the Stripe for AI.' Now Stripe owns it. CapitalG (Alphabet's growth fund) led the May Series B; three months later their investment is worth 5.4x. And OpenRouter's moat is routing, not models. If any AI lab changes its API, OpenRouter rewires. The question is whether a traffic cop is worth $7 billion.
