The trick: Headline Over Filing

DeepSeek launched a free coding tool and raised API prices 355% on the same day.

It collected 135K GitHub stars. Independent audits found tenfold token overhead and a security sandbox that skips networks.

DeepSeek Harness reached 135K GitHub stars in 4 days, called by tech aggregators 'one of the fastest rises in GitHub history.' It launched August 13 as a free, open-source coding agent.

Before you read on. Your call?

stars are real (144,872 via GitHub API). But 'fastest in history' is unverified by GitHub or DeepSeek. The same day, DeepSeek raised V4-Pro output prices 355% at peak. Independent technical audits found 41 of 2,000+ claimed plugins actually work, tenfold token overhead vs alternatives, and a security sandbox that excludes network and process visibility.

The twist

the free tool runs on DeepSeek's API. The API just got 355% more expensive. The repo collected 135K stars as a free front door to a newly expensive back end. DeepSeek's official reason: 'allocate resources more reasonably.' The timing says: acquire users first, charge later.

Say this in tomorrow's meeting“DeepSeek launched a free coding tool and raised its API prices 355% the same day. Independent auditors say it is not production-ready. It is an open-source front door to a newly expensive API.”

Receipts

  1. Supports thenewstack.io: Within only a few hours, the repo picked up more than 33,000 GitHub stars, and that number is climbing quickly
  2. Refutes justin3go.com: one developer's preliminary test found that, on the same model, Pi's uncached input runs around 4.5K tokens versus roughly 47.6K for dsh
  3. Refutes wavect.io: It is not yet a production control plane you should adopt on momentum alone. The sandbox governs filesystem effects.
  4. Context qz.com: DeepSeek raising API prices by up to 1,100% starting Aug 16
  5. Supports explainx.ai: The live GitHub API reported 135,042 stars and 13,592 forks on the deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness repository four days after it was created
